Who we are...

Daruma SKills has been created by Dr. Lois Butcher-Poffley.

Dr. B has her M.Ed. and PhD. in sport and exercise psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.  She is a Certified Consultant through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (CC-AASP), and a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s Sport Psychology Registry. A former professional dancer, her consulting practice includes musicians, singers, and dancers, as well as athletes and coaches, and people who want to be the best they can be in work and in life. As a sport psychology consultant, she has worked with athletes of all ages, at all skill levels, individually and in teams. Clients include Olympic, NCAA Division I and Division III, and USGF nationally ranked athletes.

Dr. B has also worked extensively in gymnastics as both psychological skills trainer and dance coach. In the arts, Dr. B began performing at the age of 5. Growing up in New York City, she was dancing, singing and acting professionally by age 15. After moving to the Philadelphia area, she opened her own studio and choreographed for local theater companies. In addition to training in tap, jazz, ballet and musical theater, she has additional background in voice, piano, and acting.

Dr. B has been a workshop presenter and speaker at national and international conferences for sport psychology and health care. She has also been part of two grant programs to help obese children in disadvantaged neighborhoods. After facing a few setbacks of her own, Dr. B created Daruma Skills to help idividuals become more resilient, to persevere, and be able to bounce back when things aren't going to plan. Like the Daruma Doll,  Dr. B believes in "keeping both eyes open" through visualizing a goal and finding the right tools to work toward it.
